Learning something new

You know, I used to vaguely wonder what the conservative equivalent of threatening to move to Canada was. Did they all promise to buy 300 guys and live in a shack in Montana or something?

Now I know. They bring guns to town halls, throw hissy fits over nothing, and talk about about Russia like it is 1965.

So weird.

Prop 8

Dear California,

It should not be easier to take away my civil rights than to raise property taxes. This is no way to run a state.

Fuck you very much,

.nicole.

World! Ending!

Way to terrify my first thing in the morning, California!

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, alarmed by the ongoing national financial crisis, warned Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson on Thursday that the state might need an emergency loan of as much as $7 billion from the federal government within weeks.

I really thought Schwarzenegger was just fucking around with the whole budget crisis thing. :/

Palin v. Couric

Ok. So here’s the clip of Palin being unable to talk about Supreme Court cases. It wasn’t so much that she wasn’t able to name one, she just couldn’t talk about any one with enough knowledge to say she disagreed with it.

But she *does* manage to babble about local control. Which…is she talking about Brown here? For real. When do conservatives like to talk about local control? School boards teach creationism, abortion (they don’t actually favor local control in that case as the late pregnancy abortion ban that Congress passed shows), and segregation. They do not favor local control when it comes to gay marriage or some medical pot, to bring up some current issues where you’d think States Rights would come into play. States Rights = Brown. Legislation from the bench = Roe. Yes?

I know I’m, like, assuming that she had some kind of point. And that when she talks it means something. But still. Is there some *other* decided-on-a-local-level issue that she could be talking about that I’m not thinking of? I guess she could be talking about Lawrence v. Texas, but somehow I doubt she’s even aware that sodomy laws aren’t allowed anymore.

(The bar has been set so low for this woman that I’m just happy that this was the question she couldn’t answer and not “quick! name a Supreme Court case!”)

So cute!

They all match! How could you not want to vote for that?

President Bush makes children run in fear.

I don’t know if it is the jet lag or the fact that I’m only just eating dinner at 9:30, but this video had me crying with joy. Bush attended some T-ball games and all the kids playing got to meet him. One amazing kid walked up to him took a good look at the guy and then ran as far away from him as she could get. Fucking brilliant.
This is clearly the smartest child on the face of the earth.

Supreme Court cases I’ve never heard of before

PALMORE v. SIDOTI, 466 U.S. 429 (1984)
466 U.S. 429

PALMORE v. SIDOTI
CERTIORARI TO THE DISTRICT COURT OF APPEAL OF FLORIDA, SECOND DISTRICT

No. 82-1734.

Argued February 22, 1984
Decided April 25, 1984

When petitioner and respondent, both Caucasians, were divorced in Florida, petitioner, the mother, was awarded custody of their 3-year-old daughter. The following year respondent sought custody of the child by filing a petition to modify the prior judgment because of changed conditions, namely, that petitioner was then cohabiting with a Negro, whom she later married. The Florida trial court awarded custody to respondent, concluding that the child’s best interests would be served thereby. Without focusing directly on the parental qualifications of petitioner, her present husband, or respondent, the court reasoned that although respondent’s resentment at petitioner’s choice of a black partner was insufficient to deprive petitioner of custody, there would be a damaging impact on the child if she remained in a racially mixed household. The Florida District Court of Appeal affirmed.

Held:

The effects of racial prejudice, however real, cannot justify a racial classification removing an infant child from the custody of its natural mother. The Constitution cannot control such prejudice, but neither can it tolerate it. Private biases may be outside the reach of the law, but the law cannot, directly or indirectly, give them effect. Pp. 431-434.

426 So.2d 34, reversed.

BURGER, C. J., delivered the opinion for a unanimous Court.

1984, y’all!
…..

I’d never heard of this case before reading this blog post over at The Dead Racists Society about the pending California supreme court hearing on the ban on gay marriage. I only just started reading this blog a week or so ago and I’m sort of loving it. The author does a good job tying the battles of the civil rights movement in the middle of the last century together with the current gay marriage debate, which I highly enjoy.

Ann Coulter endorses Clinton

Ok, technically she endorsed Clinton over McCain, but still. I don’t even know what to do with this. I mean, besides hope an pray for an Obama presidency.

Jesus. To hell in a handbasket, I swear.

Glenn Beck – Idiot

Holy good lord, Glenn Beck (CNN anchor and syndicated talk show host who has already made a name for himself by actually devoting whole hour long shows to talk about The End Times and how fast passes are a tool of the Beast. And no, I am not kidding about the fast pass thing.) is a goddamned idiot.

I think there is a handful of people who hate America. Unfortunately for them, a lot of them are losing their homes in a forest fire today.

There are so many ways in which is the an idiotic statement, not least of which is the fact that the areas of So Cal that happen to be on fire right now are among the most conservative areas of California. It seems a bit…what’s the word I’m looking for? Oh yeah! Insane! It seems a bit insane to be attacking your fundraising base, doesn’t it? I mean, those are his people, right? Does he think all of California is San Francisco or something?

Although I guess since immediately before that he was babbling about how he strongly disagrees with Schwarzenegger that Republicans should care about the health and educations of Americans so maybe he really does think all those rich Republicans really do hate America.

In other news – I’m really impressed with the evacuations going on down there. They’ve actually gotten people out of harm’s way with the help of public services like they’re a proper first world nation or something. I have to wonder, though, if they’d manage to employ all those school buses and open all those hotels and stadiums if this fire had been going down in Apple Valley instead of Canyon Country. I think all those retirees would be shit out of luck if a wildfire somehow managed to break out in the Mojave.

Also, I’m highly amused by the fact that almost every story I’ve read about the evacuations mentions people leaving with their pets. Aw! The puppies and kittens are saved!

Bah.

I just read a rather depressing Washington Post article about differences in how men and women are percived when they try to ask for better salaries.

Their study, which was coauthored by Carnegie Mellon researcher Lei Lai, found that men and women get very different responses when they initiate negotiations. Although it may well be true that women often hurt themselves by not trying to negotiate, this study found that women’s reluctance was based on an entirely reasonable and accurate view of how they were likely to be treated if they did. Both men and women were more likely to subtly penalize women who asked for more — the perception was that women who asked for more were “less nice”.

“What we found across all the studies is men were always less willing to work with a woman who had attempted to negotiate than with a woman who did not,” Bowles said. “They always preferred to work with a woman who stayed mum. But it made no difference to the men whether a guy had chosen to negotiate or not.”

I like that last line quoted.  If you’re a dude and you ask for more money, getting told no is the worst that will happen to you.  The dude you work for isn’t going to think badly of you for asking.  Not so much for women.

Man, you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t.  You can’t get more money unless you demand more, but if you actually go ahead and ask for it you’re likely to not only be told no but be seen as uppity for even asking not matter how qualified you are.  This is on top of the fact that women get offered less money to begin with a lot of the time.
